Here is a post card photo by Homer R. Hill of New Jersey Transit engine #4877. Shown here is NJT engine #4877, a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) electric built in Juniata as Pennsylvania Railroad #4877 during January of 1939, rated at 4,620 horsepower, later owned by Penn Central and Conrail, and presently on display at the United Railway Historical Society in Boonton, New Jersey. |

"Celebration" Party for NJT GG1 #4877 |
Description: |
In celebration of the former Pennsylvania GG1 #4877 now serving the New Jersey Transit, the New Jersey Historical Society threw a party complete with an "Celebration" cake in honor of "Big Red" after a beautiful paint job setting it back to the "Big Red" color. It was also in anticipation of its retirement in October 29, 1983. In 1991 after Big Red's retirement in 1983, the NJT donated the locomotive to the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey. Currently it is stored at the Boonton yard and hopefully will be part of the future New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center. Unfortunately, the avid rail fan who took these photos was listed. |

NJT GG1 #4877 - New Jersey Transit |
Description: |
This beautiful GG1 led a very productibe and interesting life. Built by GE and the PRR Altoona Shops in January of 1939 as PRR #4877, it served the Pennsy for many years pulling passengers at speeds of 100 mph. The once proud GG1 then bounced through the ill-fated Penn Central years and then onto the Conrail roster after the PC collapse. It next served in New Jersey commuter servce (NJDOT>NJT) unitl final retirement on October 29, 1983. In 1991, NJT donated it to the United RR Historical Society of New Jersey (URHS). It is stored in the Boonton Yards awaiting its new home in the future New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center. An unknown rail fan too this photo of Big Red at its celebration party. |

NJT 4GG1 #877 - New Jersey Transit |
Description: |
The beautiful Art Deco styling by Raymond Loewy allows the GG1's to hold a special place in railroading history as one of the sleekest stylings ever created, at least IMHO! Even more impressive was its speed - often reaching sustained speeds of 100 mph, something that was lost after these beautiful machines were retired. An unknown rail fan too this photo of Big Red at its celebration party. |

Former PRR GG1 4877 |
Description: |
The April, 1983 lineup of GG1's would not be so long for much longer at South Amboy. Former PRR GG-1 4877, repainted in Tuscan Red in 1981, rests second in a line of Gs at the engine terminal. Just 6 months later, "Big Red" would be honored to pull the last run of the GG-1. Sadly, it was not to be as a breakdown forced sister GG-1 4879 to rescue the train. This beautiful GG-1 was preserved (in as-built Brunswick green) along with her sister unit 4879 as part of the United Railroad Historical Society of NJ collection in Boonton, NJ. |

GG1 Out to Pasture: 4877 at Perth Amboy, 1983 |
Description: |
After GG1s were retired from their main NY-Washington stomping grounds, the best place to find them was on their daily commuter runs between NY and South Amboy. On this summer day in 1983, just a few months before all GG1s would be retired, 4877 GG1 4877, repainted in PRRs classic tuscan red color scheme, drifts light through the station at Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in a cut overflowing with lush growth. Check out all that classic jointed Pennsy rail. |

Queen of the festival |
Description: |
For a number of years, NJ Transit hosted an event called the Hoboken Festival at the ex DLW station there. They would bring in a variety of equipment for display, not only their own, but M&E and Amtrak as well. The queen of the fleet, restored GG 1 4877, of course had to be towed in, along with all the other AC powered trains, since it would not run on the DLW 3000 volt DC power then in place. It still looked good. One has to wonder, had the Gs lasted long enough to make it into the AC era on the DLW, how they would have looked rolling down the three track main through Harrison, or pulling into Summit. |
