AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1962. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9603 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #9603 is an AF-15 built by the American Locomotive Company in August of 1948, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in August of 1964 after just 16 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-A set is rounding the Curve with an iron-ore drag on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and the steel mills near Pittsburgh. |
