Union Pacific 4014 rests in the yard at Cheyenne sometime in 1956. 4014 was the 15th of the original 20 Big Boys, and had been on the rails for 15 years at the time of this photo. 4014 would be donated to a museum in Pomona, California after retirement. In 2012/2013, Union Pacific and the SoCal Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society negotiated a deal, wherein 4014 would be sent to UP for restoration, and in exxchange the society would get an SD40-2 and caboose. 4014 was towed back to Cheyenne, and restoration work would begin in 2016. After over two years of work, 4014 would emerge from the Cheyenne backshop fully operational. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |
