PRR 9700, BF-15A, #2 of 2, 1957
Kern. Here is the second of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Fred R. Kern ~ this one taken near View, Pennsylvania, on 20 October 1957. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9700 and two more "BF" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9700 is a BF-15A constructed in April of 1950, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in February of 1965 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-B set is rockin' 'n' rollin' with a long string of empty hoppers on their way back to Altoona and the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania.
