Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 8903 at Galesburg, Illinois on August 14, 1977, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society Bulletin Number 6, CENTER-CABS, edited by Hol Wagner. When Porter 8902 at the Galesburg tie plant finally wore out and was retired in late 1964, the 9107 ( built by GE in February 1941 c/n 12952 ) was moved to Galesburg ( from Nebraska ) as a replacement. Renumbered 8903, it was outfitted with the large buffer plates removed from the 8902. The 8903 was withdrawn from service in 1974 and sat forlornly in the Galesburg yard until late 1977, when it was finally scrapped. |
