Thanks for the kind comment, Alex! Agreed, the RS27's were fine looking locomotives. Thankfully, a few days before this, I was able to see Conrail's last operating RS27, 2407, at Weirton, W Va.

Wow, Alan. This is one of the largest scrap lines of mixed heritage that I have ever seen. Although very sad to see these dead soldiers, thanks for sharing the photos!

My pleasure to share the photos! When I first saw this deadline in August, 1977, the lines were so long I couldn't get them all in a single shot down the line! The enormity of power sidelined from years of deferred maintenance, or simply too many years of hard work, by the bankrupt 5 (PC, LV, EL, RDG, and CNJ) was in full evidence at Altooona in 1977 and 1978.
