4th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during April of 1966. Shown here are eight freight trains parked in the Altoona Yards, all awaiting crews so that they can begin climbing the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Visible on the left are several passenger cars awaiting reconditioning in the PRR's Passenger Car Shops behind them. Visible near the center (L to R) are PRR engines #7210 and #7196-B. Both are EFS-17M's built by EMD in 1957 and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. Visible at the far right is PRR engine #8575, an ES-15M built by EMD in 1953 rated at 1,500 horsepower. It is leading four other locomotives and a cabin car out of the Yard, heading West. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge. |
