It was 7:15AM as L&N GP38 4007 and Amtrak E9A 428 headed into the morning sun with a special passenger move. The train had just left New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with 11 passengers, and was ferrying 10 cars to Birmingham for use on Amtrak's 1977 TRANSCONTINENTAL STEAM EXCURSION. The EXCURSION began the next day, and was used to get former SP 4-8-4 4449 from Birmingham back home to Portland. The 4449 had been at the Southern Railway's steam shop in Birmingham after its 2-year tour on the AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN. At this location, in New Orleans City Park, the train was operating over the Southern Railway, on its way from the NOUPT Eastern Connection at East City Junction to the L&N at L&N Junction - 3.5 miles . |
