C&NW RSD5 1688 aqt Omaha, Nebraska on April 21, 1963 photo by Lou Schmitz from the Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in April 1954 (c/n 80865) it was retired February 17, 1981. The C&NW had three RSD5's which included both a steam generator and dynamic brake option, resulting in a high short hood, and for obvious reasons was nicknamed "Hammerhead" (although technically, this was the rear of the unit, clearly "Hammerbutt" isn't any good). Its original assignment was in a pool of diesels replacing steam power on suburban trains in Chicago. It later migrated west to the "Alco Line" in southern Minnesota and South Dakota. |
