Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad VO-1000 9378 at North Kansas City, Missouri, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in December 1944 (c/n 71977), traded for new power during February 1966. It was one of 30 VO-1000's allotted to the CB&Q by the War Production Board during World War II. The VO-1000's were assigned 9350-9379 road numbers. This particular locomotive has been retro-fitted with the four stack exhaust system developed by Baldwin to cure an overheating problem produced by the single exhaust. The CB&Q applied this fix to some but not all of their VO-1000's. This locomotive also displays the carbody changes applied by Baldwin during mid-1944. The cab and battery box ends are squared off, omitting of the contoured plates applied to the earlier version, and the frame ends are angled, instead of contoured. |
