Description: |
Here is page nine of a ten-page cover article by William M. Moedinger, Jr., entitled "The Road To Paradise." It was published originally in the April 1961 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 33. Top Left Photo Caption: "In the absence of a coal tower, truck with hydraulic lift serves as a fueling facility for ex-CNR 0-6-0." Strasburg Rail Road engine #31 is an 0-6-0 shifter built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during August of 1908. According to Gary Everhart, "it has worn several numbers through the years": originally it was Grand Trunk Western's #1708; then Canadian National's #7157 circa 1923, renumbered CN #7240 in 1952, and renumbered CN #7312 in 1957; then purchased, reconditioned, and renumbered SRC #31 in 1960 ~ some 52 years after it first hit the rails! Bottom Right Photo: Shown here is SRC engine #1, an 0-4-0 HL-20 locomotive built by Plymouth during October of 1926. |

Strasburg (SRC) freight-original shortline |
Description: |
Its easy to forget that the Strasburg is still a Class 3 shoptline, hauling freight. On my one visit there, I managed to catch a freigth move, switching out plastic pellet hoppers. What you can't see is the SRC GE 44 tonner is actually pxshing at the rear, and old #1 is being used as a switching platform by the conductor. |

St. Louis & Troy |
Description: |
In 1933 the St. Louis & Hannibal RR abandoned its entire southern section; 53 miles from Bowling Green to Gilmore, MO. The small, Lincoln County town of Troy, Missouri, anxious to keep rail service, bought the 4 mile portion to the CB&Q connection ~t Moscow Mills. The new road, the St.Louis & Troy, operated for 27 years before being abandoned in 1960. Final power was this 20 ton Plymouth JLT, bought new in 1946 (5385, 6/47). It's rhown here near the end before reportedly heading on to Dundee Cement in Des Plaines IL. |
