CB&Q E9 9985A
Description:
CB&Q E9 9985A westbound on Train #11, the Nebraska Zephyr, the daily Chicago to Lincoln, Nebraska mail train, at Naperville, Illinois, January 16, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in December 1955 (c/n 20533) on EMD Order 2071, became BN 9985 after the March 2, 1970 merger, was remanufactured by Morrison-Knudsen in November 1973, returning numbered BN 9915 (owned by the West Suburban Mass Transit District and leased to the BN), retired in 1992, becoming NYS&W 2402. The following is excerpted from the book, Chicago Union Station, by Edward M. DeRouin (Pixels Publishing):The economies of the 1950's drove the Burlington, among others, to consolidate schedules to reduce operating costs. Effective February 1, 1958, the Nebraska Zephyr and Coloradoan ran as one train. After October 28, 1962, the cars of the Kansas City Zephyr were included in the consist. They were removed at Galesburg and continued their trip to Kansas City (as Train #35). The primary purpose of the Coloradoan was to bring mail and express to Council Bluffs and the Union Pacific for forwarding to places like Salt Lake City and Oakland. A secondary chore was to carry storage mail to Denver. Now those cars were tucked in between the power and passenger cars of the two Zephyrs. Shortly after 9:00 AM, a switch engine would shove the articulated cars of the Nebraska Zephyr, the four cars of the Kansas City Zephyr, and cars filled with express to the (Chicago Union Station, CUS) depot. After setting the consist on the station track, the engine would then add two RPOs pulled from station track 14 and move on to other work. After finishing breakfast at the Zephyr Diner, the engine crew prepared their locomotives and when the switches were lined, proceeded west to Union Avenue. Once on the main, the locomotives reversed and headed for CUS. Before reaching the depot, the units were lined for station track 32, where storage cars filled with mail were picked up. Once the steam and air lines were hooked up and brakes tested, the locomotives and mail proceeded south past the Harrison Street Tower. Burlington 11's final preparatory move with a switchman, referred to as a Pilot, qualified to control backup moves at CUS, in place on the station end of the head end cars, and controlled the automatic brake with a hose and valve assembly referred to as a monkey tail (because of its shape). Upon receipt of the proper signal, the Pilot would draw off some air, and the Engineer would 'shove on reduction'. This procedure held slack in check. The movement was stopped before making the coupling and the monkey tail removed. Hand signals guided the last movement, and with people boarding, postal clerks working in the RPOs, and mail handlers loading the storage cars, the coupling had to be, and was, gentle. After the steam and air lines were made, the standing brake test was conducted and Number 11 was ready for departure at 11:00 AM.

CB&Q E9 9986B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9986B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 11, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Of course even as a 17 year old I would not be out in this weather unless there was good reason, and in this case, this train overshot the station, set off the gates at Loomis Street, was in the process of backing against traffic to load at Naperville, and gave me time to grab my camera. No doubt an embarassing situation for the Engineer.

CB&Q E9 9986B
Description:
CB&Q E9 9986B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 18, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is speculation: I believe this is eastbound Train #30, departing Aurora 7:01 AM, due in Chicago 7:50 AM. It was known as the Ak-Sar-Ben Zephyr, which is Nebraska spelled backward. It left Lincoln, Nebraska at 9:00 PM. About a half dozen cars back is a new suburban bi-level coach, likely being ferried from Lincoln to Chicago for assignment to the suburban department. As I understand it, the CB&Q received new deliveries in Lincoln to avoid paying Illinois sales tax. I will also speculate that this was not the lead locomotive when this train departed Lincoln, based on the open MU plug access door to the left of the upper headlight, and the attached MU hoses. Generally, the CB&Q removed the MU hoses from the lead locomotive because there was no provision to retain them to prevent them from flying around and banging against the pilot, not only creating noise, but also chipping the paint.

CBQ 9986 (with green class lamps?!)
Description:
Just out of the St Paul Union Depot which served 8 different railroads & had 23 tracks--- leaving Division Street on the CB&Q & approaching Hoffman Avenue on the Milwaukee--- four CB&Q E8/ E9 passenger engines have the combined Morning Zephyr & the GN Empire Builder with NP North Coast Limited as a second section of the same schedule soon to follow, headed on its way down the upper Mississippi River valley to LaCrosse & Chicago!!! The Burlington ran on the Wisconsin side of the river & the Milwaukee Road ran on Minnesota side, with the Milwaukee Hiawathas & Burlington Zephyrs racing & chasing each other up & down the river valley between St Croix Tower, Minnesota & La Crosse, Wisconsin. The joint track passenger mains were left hand running and the Milwaukee Road freight mains were right hand running!!! Today it is all CTC, the interlocking towers where I once worked & the roundhouse @ Dayton's Bluff are long gone & the glory that was the St. Paul Union Depot is now a parking lot!!! Most people today have no idea of what was once here & the different railroads that ran & interchanged cars between themselves!!!

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9987A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 19, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. On Sunday evenings, the Burlington would run a few dozen E units from Chicago to Aurora on the Dinkys (commuter trains) to get ready for Monday morning's rush hour. On Friday evenings, the process would be reversed to get the E units into Chicago for rotation into Zephyr service.

CB&Q E9 9987A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9987A at the Eola Illinois Reclamation Plant on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9987A was built in December 1955 (c/n 20537), and was wrecked at Montgomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. This unit was the third of three E-units (the rear of E7 9922B on the left was the second) leading Train Number 3, which was mis-directed into a standing, detouring Rock Island train and Number 3 struck the Rock Island train at about 52 mph. Four railroad employees were killed. After the wreck was cleaned up and service restored, the wreckage was moved to the Eola Reclamation Plant where it was held for a couple of weeks while the investigation took place. Number 9987A was repaired and returned to service, the other two CB&Q locomoives were scrapped.

CB&Q E9 9987B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9987B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 15, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1955 (c/n 20538) on EMD Order 2071 (the last order for CB&Q E-units), it became BN 9982, then 9912, retired in July 1992, and may now be located in Nashville, Tennessee on the Nashville & Eastern. It is seen here on an eastbound Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train), and the first car behind the locomotive is a new cab control car. The Burlington's first revenue push-pull train ran only four days earlier, and the crews were still in training, so for a bit of time, the cab control cars were pulled eastbound. Later, the cab control cars were all on the eastbound end, and the locomotives were on the westbound end. This kept the noise and diesel exhaust at the far end of Union Station, away from the boarding and departing passengers.

It was left hand running because of the climb up and out of the Mississippi River valley west of St Croix Tower near Hastings, Minnesota on the Milwaukee and Prescott, Wisconsin on the Burlington--- where the St Croix river joins the mighty Mississippi on its way to New Orleans!!!

CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 242 and E9 9988B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 30, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The GP7 is leading the East End Way Freight east, having finished switching the industries on both sides of the tracks in Naperville. Since the way freight occupies Track 3, the Dinky is on Track 2, and the commuters were briefly the main ingredient in a train sandwich at the station seen in the background. The Dinky is overtaking the way freight but will stop at Lisle, four miles further east, allowing the way freight to catch up. This will continue until Downers Grove, a likely stopping point for the way freight to perform a few more switching duties usually at Pepperidge Farm.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9988B was built in January 1956 ( c/n 20540 ), one of the last E-units delivered to the Burlington. Sometime after March 2, 1970, it became BN 9983, a number it held for about two years. During August 1972, the BN's suburban properties, including E-units and rolling stock, were transferred to the West Suburban Mass Transit District ( WSMTD ) and were leased back to the BN for operation and maintenance. The E-units were shipped of to Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, Idaho for rebuilding, and 9988B became 9913 in September 1973. In July 1992 the E-units were retired, and 9913 went on to serve on the Spirit of Tennessee Train as number 1996. At the end of that train's tour, the 9913 was purchased by the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami, Florida where it resides today painted as CB&Q 9913.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B at the head end of the North Coast Limited in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on an unknown day in April 1965, Anscochrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is a slide I purchased in a hobby shop for 25 cents. It is hand labeled; 'North Coast Limited In Milwaukee During Flooding Of Mississippi River'. The date stamped on the slide mount is APR 65. I have a slide of an abbreviated Twin Cities Zephyr that I shot in Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965 with the same notation. The rules and agreements governing a train from another railroad require that a CB&Q crew operate the train under the supervision of a pilot from the host railroad. In this case, the CB&Q would need to transport relief CB&Q crews from their home base to locations on the Milwaukee Road where crew changes took place. If the detours needed to operate for an extended period of time, the CB&Q would put their crews up in local hotels for the duration of the detour operation. Needless to say, an expensive way to run a railroad.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 25, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1956 (c/n 20540) on EMD Order 2071A, this was one of ten E9's (#'s 9985A,B - 9989A,B) ordered by the CB&Q in 1955, which turned out to be the Q's last order of E-units. This unit became BN 9983, was rebuilt to E9Am 9913, was retired in 1992, and moved on to other careers. It is seen here on what may be Train #229, a Saturday and Sunday Only Every Stop train, bringing a westbound two car Dinky into Naperville at around 7:25 PM on a Sunday evening with the help of two more E's, and leaving a trail of fresh brake shoe smoke. The practice at the time was to run the E's back to Chicago after rush hour on Friday evening, service and rotate them into Zephyr service, take the E's in Zephyr service and rotate them into suburban service, and on Sunday evening run the E's out to Aurora for Monday morning's rush hour. This particular unit was reputed to have taken a two car Dinky up to 100 mph after leaving Naperville before ducking under the EJ&E bridge at Eola, a distance of roughly five miles. This, of course, was a bit over the 75 mph speed limit in that territory. Chasing the Dinky into town this day is a freight, seen in the smoky background.
