CSS 803 - Chicago South Shore & South Bend
Title:  CSS 803 - Chicago South Shore & South Bend
Description:  Another iconic item was this double headed "Little Joe" electric locomotive built by GE in May of 1949, originally ordered by Russia but cancelled, hence the nickname after Joseph Stalin. The unit has the 2-D-D-2 wheel arrangement. Luckily it survives at the Illinois Rwy Museum where it has been lovingly restored to its shiny brilliant orange and silver paint scheme. No date was given for this photo but it appears it was a rail fan trip in the mid-1960's. No photographer listed.

Description:  Here is a sharp image from an original negative of the Chicago South Shore & South Bend "Little Joe" #803 built in 1949 originally for the Russian goverment. No photographer or date was given but with the logo "The Little Engine That Could" on the side puts it in the mid-1970's as CSSB fought to stay alive. .

The unit is now showing a lot of wear and will eventually be retired in 1982 only to be reborn at the Illinois Rwy Museum in Union, IL. It is now fully restored and is put into service a few times a year. No photographer was listed for this color slide.

Description:  Affectionately known as a "Little Joe" after the order for these units was cancelled by Russia by Joseph Staline, this 1949 GE double ended loco pulls a string of freight just east of the CSS shops in Michigan City, IN. Two years later, this unit will be saved from the scrap yard by the Illinois Rwy Museum in Union, IL, where it has been fully restored. Unknown photographer.
