Title:
GTW 5855
Description:
A CN local prepares to switch the Midwest Paper Group mill, 540 Prospect St., via former C&NW rails at Combined Locks, WI, on 6 Nov. '21. Founded in 1889 (some references state 1892) as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Commonly known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it has been controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. Ten members of the mill’s management purchased the facility from France-based Sequana SA on 19 Dec. ’14. Forced into receivership, it was purchased by scrap dealers, Industrial Assets Corp. and Maynards Industries USA, in Oct. ’17. They bought it to shut it down and gut it. By some miracle, they changed their minds and restarted the paper machines. The facility was re-named Midwest Paper Group ca. 19 Apr. ’18. There are flashing blue lights on both sides of the driveway (at left) and a sign that says "Train in the area when flashing, proceed with caution". The RR crew turns on the lights when they arrive. It looks like there used to be a RR crossing gates at both blue lights.

A CN local crosses State St. and parallels Garner's Creek as it departs the Midwest Paper Group mill, 540 Prospect St., via former C&NW rails at Combined Locks, WI, on 6 Nov. '21. I wish I had captured a photograph of that awesome, old Chevrolet waiting at the grade crossing.

Description:
A CN local passes under E. College Ave. and over E. Banta Ct. as it descends into 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 6 Nov. '21. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’ Many years ago it was referred to 'The Water Power.'

GTW 5855 and WC 15 Caboose
Description:
A CN train parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Snells, WI, on 13 Apr. '25. Train was headed for Oshkosh and its consist included WC 15 caboose (the former AC 9602). Snells, also formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. Some modern maps don't even include the dot. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel on this side of the train. I had not intended to chase trains today. However, when I saw a train with a caboose departing the yard at Neenah, I was obligated to give chase.

Description:
A CN train shoves across Oregon St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Oshkosh, WI, on 13 Apr. '25.
