Looking East
Title:  Looking East
Description:  This view looks east from the Maine Reduction yard. Brooks is about mile or so ahead around a several cuves. The mile marker on the right is '14B' The short bridge deck at center frame beside the whistle post passes over the aptly named: 'Underpass Road' The whistle post in the far distance at the entrance to a curve warns the train crew of the approaching Rt139 crossing another 900 or so feet ahead. /DL

Billing Database
Title:  Billing Database
Description:  Here is an interesting tidbit taken from the largets rolladex (wheeldex) I ever saw. It was floor mounted and contained several thousand of these cards. It is the billing break down for, in this case, freight passing between the BML at Burnham Jct, Me. and the B&O at Milan, Ind. The BML gets 14% of the tariff and the other roads, for this particular routing divi up the remaining 86%. The LV gets 12%, the D&H 10% and so on. The break out for NKP and B&O must have been in question this document was typed as they are not broken down. I was told that there could be several cards like this for a particular destination, each based on varous routes and the railroads taking part. Apparently this database was under constant revision and was used for reference for billing on every load. /DL

Bridge
Title:  Bridge
Description:  The focus of the last 2 summer weeks was clearing the eastern approach to the Wescot Lower bridge abutment. (Two of BMLs larger bridges ford Wescot Stream in Waldo. Wescot Lower spans the down stream crossing.) A little historical background on this bridge from, Bob the resident historian. Located at MP 3.66B the origional bridge was built in 1867 as a Wood Decked Howe Truss bridge. (A good description of this design is outlined on pages 32 & 33 of North American Radlroad Bridges by Solmon.) The debth of the truss is evident by the cement footing poured on top of the stone foundation to support the steel members visable in these photographs. In 1930s the BML bought two bridges from the BAR to replace this and Wescot Upper. They were stored at Forbes Pit where they received several coats of paint. The speed limit over the wood spans was held to 6 mph due to instability in the structure. As a side bar these two bridges were the only wood spans left on the MEC when the MEC turned the RR back to the BML in Jan 1926. In 1940, contractor A.P.Wyman installed this steel bridge over a period of several weekends. /DL

Description:  Looking at the east approach to the Lower Wescot bridge. Clearing on either side just completed. The guard rails in the center of the guage are origional iron rail imported form England when the BML was built in the 1860s. 60lb as I recall. /DL
