Building new bridge over Quantico Creek |
Description: |
This is the first of many shots that will over time, chronical the building of the new double track bridge at Quantico Creek, at Quantico, VA. This is a project of CSX, VRE and the Commonwealth of Virginia. This is the second project in a long line that will lead to triple tracking the RF&P Sub from Washington to Fredericksburg and possibly Richmond. This view is looking north from the Quantico train station. The signals are located at the switch bringing 2 tracks into one to cross the existing single track bridge. Possum Point power plant is in the background. New bridge will be located to the left of signals. |

Existing single track Quantico Creek bridge. |
Description: |
I took a series of shots around the bridge to give you a feel for the lay of the land so to speak. This is the wiped out boat ramp next to the bridge. Hurricane Isabel put the artistic touches on the dock. Previously you could drive a 3/4 pickup onto this dock. High water and winds did their damage to what used to be a very level wooden surface. The view on the other side of the bridge is looking NW up Quantico Creek towards what used to be, in the 16 and 1700's, the bustling seaport of Dumfries. Sailing ships used to ply these waters. |

New bridge construction |
Description: |
The new bridge is being built inside (on the creek side) of the old single track bridge. Because there is no way to bring in barges loaded with equipment as they did when the single bridge was built, the contractor is building a road or dike across the creek next to the new bridge. I'm assuming the dike will be removed upon completion. |

Driving new pilings |

View of the pile driver and dike. I hope this isn't too boring with no trains actually in sight. In the days of fallen flags and abandoned rights of ways, triple tracking a main line is a big news item in the railfan world. |

Placing the pilings |
Description: |
These pilings are a steel casement which they fill with rebar and concrete. I guess the steel casement stays in place. I don't know how they would get it off. Piers seemed to be placed at about 150 ft increments. The old bridge was about 50 ft spans. I'm sure I'll be proven wrong on this by the time the project is done but that's how it appears now. |
