At the left is the Pennsylvania Railroad's SLOPE Tower. In the center are the PRR's mainline tracks leading into downtown Altoona. Parked under the six-track signal bridge are several maintenance-of-way bunk cars. The large structures at the right mark the location of the 12th Street Car Shops. All were built by GM-EMD. #9804 is an EF-15A constructed in March of 1951, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in October of 1967 after just 16 years of revenue service. They've just completed a helper run up the East Slope to Gallitzin and back, and are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge on their way to East Altoona for further assignment. Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8612, #8613, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8612 and #8613 are AS-24M's rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8612 was constructed in June of 1956, while #8613 was built in August of the same year. They're serving as tail-end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train that's passing under the 24th Street Bridge on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the helpers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9530 is an EF-15 constructed in September of 1948. They're pulling an eastbound coal train and are about to pass under the 17th Street Bridge. Visible at the lower left is the branch line leading to WYE Tower in Duncansville ~ and thence either East to Hollidaysburg (so, too, the line to Petersburg, Pennsylvania, or the line South to Cumberland, Maryland), or West to the New Portage Line (via the Muleshoe Curve) to the tunnels and Gallitzin. PRR Altoona Car Shops, 1965
Description:
Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here is all that remains of the Pennsylvania Railroad's engine ladder and ready tracks just East of the 17th Street Bridge. In olden days, this was one of the busiest places in all of PRR-Altoona. But by June 1965, there are no more roundhouses (once there were three of them here), no more locomotives waiting to be serviced or to be of service, and no more Altoona Car Shops ~ most of their functions having been transplanted to the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Nothing much is left but ghosts and echoes . . . which have since been supplanted by a shopping mall and the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum. (#15 of 44)

Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property between SLOPE and WORKS Towers in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 06 June 1965. Shown here is the tail-end a westbound passenger train that has stopped at the Altoona Station. Note the short train and the small number of folks on the tarmack. In olden times, the trains were much longer and the platform was much more crowded. Visible here are the 12th Street Shops on the left, the 12th Street Bridge crossing over the tracks, and the Altoona Station a little further up on the right. (#26 of 44)

They have just passed under the 4th Street Bridge with a westbound ore train. The water tank is all that remains from the Steam Age when there was a small coal/sand/water point here. 7th Street Bridge is visible in the distance.

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #2290, #2264, and two others whose numbers are not visible. All were built by EMD. #2290 and #2264 are EF-25's built in 1964 and rated at 2,500 HP each. They are pulling a westbound merchandise train past WORKS Tower. What is notable, here, is that this train is on one of the "passenger" tracks and will not stop in Altoona to change crews. In 1965, this was the exception; nowadays, it is the norm.
