Railway Express car |
Description: |
The Railway Express Agency was the FedEx of its day, handling packages and LCL freight nationwide in an era when trains were the way people shipped things. As highways got better and passenger trains declined, more of this traffic went over the road, til in 1975 REA called it quits. Here one of their fleet of cars, lettered for the Burlington, sits at the BN yard in West Burlington, now an MOW car. Seen from Amtrak 6. |

Not your typical subway |
Description: |
NYCTA had a group of R 40s rebuilt at Sumitomo Rail in Elmira Heights in the mid and late 80s. Rather than ship them by rail, as Morrison Knudsen did from Hornell, they were trucked. We see one of them going around the corner off Lake Av onto NY 17 east(back before the overpass was built and there were three traffic lights there) to head to New York. The trailer was specially equipped and had a steering mechanism to get around corners too tight for its length. It was an interesting sight. Hey, how about those gas prices!! |

American European Express |
Description: |
An ill fated attempt at a really high end passenger experience was the American European Express, which aspired to the luxury accommodations of the Orient Express. The concept was a good one, but there were not enough riders in the NY/DC to Chicago market to make it work. The sleeper Washington is at Chicago. |

Viewliner diner |
Description: |
New at the time, these cars would add capacity and some panorama to the low clearance eastern lines where Superliners could not roam. This diner is on combined 81/91 at Wilmington Del. |
