CB&Q LO-2E 87725
Title:  CB&Q LO-2E 87725
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-2E 87725 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's publication, Burlington Bulletin 20 COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: One last batch of 2,600 cubic-foot Airslide cars was purchased by the Burlington in 1965, and by that time, General American had made some noticeable changes in the design. The 50 Class LO-2E cars, Q 87700 - 87749, featured triangular gusset plates with a stamped stiffening rib at the upper end of each side in place of diagonal angle-iron braces previously used at the ends of the cars. And the vertical braces were gone, replaced by hat-section posts. Additionally, due to the use of the triangular gussets, some changes were required in the upper side ladder arrangement.

RBBQ 79839
Title:  RBBQ 79839
Description:  RBBQ 79839 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is excerpted from Burlington Bulletin No. 12, REEFERS, edited by Hol Wagner: While the CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska were building 300 60-foot insulated boxcars ( 78000 - 78299 number series ) during 1964-65, the shops also built 100 similar 50-foor cars, numbered RBBQ 79800 - 79899. These cars, turned out in January and February 1965, had Keystone cushion underframes ( and HYDRAULIC CUSHIONING lettering ), ASF ride control trucks, and Ellcon load dividers, Evans six-position side fillers, and laminated wood floors. Like the RBBX series 79550 - 79799, these cars had their 10-foot wide plug door positioned slightly off-center to the right on each side. The wide, off-center door, coupled with the comparatively short length of the car, and the fact that the door opened to the shorter end of the car, led to an unusual feature on these cars; the door stop had to be positioned right in the lower center of the Burlington Route herald.

One the end it is stencilled (top to bottom): C-60 AXLE, 33" IW C.S. WHLS., ROLLER BEARINGS 6X11, 3 11/16" SPRING TRAVEL, KEYSTONE. The last stencil, KEYSTONE, refers to the cushion underframe.

RBBQ Class RBL-5 77161
Title:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77161
Description:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77161 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car is stenciled NEW 8.67 and BLT. 8.67 HV, indicating it was built in the CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska in August 1967, and had not been re-weighed since it was built. This was one of 150 cars built during July and August 1967, road numbers 77100 - 77249. The differed from the previous batch of RBL class cars in the improved door handle on the Camel plug door, and the lack of roofwalks and full height ladders to reach the roof. The ICC banned the roofwalk and associated ladders on new cars built after January 1, 1967. As a result, the new cars' handbrakes were also positioned low on the end of the car. The herald was also positioned slightly different between the two series of cars.

Title:  CB&Q Class HC-1B 181822
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class HC-1B 181821 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 350 Class IC-1B cars built by CB&Q's Havelock, Nebraska shops in 1958, number series 181500 - 181899. In the late 1960's the CB&Q overhauled 450 aging Class HC-1 cars built bbtween 1943 and 1951. With the Burlington Northern merger imminent, 250 cars rebuilt in 1969 featured a pre-merger paint scheme that eliminated the herald and substituted!an all-caps BURLINGTON for the previous upper and lower case Burlington at the upper left side of the car. All lettering was red, and space was left for the word NORTHERN, to"be added once the merger was consummated, but that was never done. The BN opted for black lettering, and the lettering font employed by the Q on all its per-merger painued cars did not match the Helvetica font ultimately used by the BN.

Between 1937 and 1938, the CB&Q constructed 150 class SM-19 stock cars at Galesburg, numbered 52000-52149. Unfortunately, the ORER does not list the cars by class, but does show that in 1955 the CB&Q had 845 stock cars in the 52000-53199 number series, in 1969 that number was 823, and in 1971 (BN), that number was 753.

RBBQ Class RBL-5 77171
Title:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77171
Description:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77171 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was one of 150 cars built during July and August 1967 by the CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska, road numbers 77100 - 77249.

CB&Q Class HC-1A 181520
Title:  CB&Q Class HC-1A 181520
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class HC-1A 181520 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the COTS sticker, this car was built in April 1957. It was part of a group of 297 car in the 181250-181546 number series built by the CB&Q at Havelock, Nebraska. It is stenciled: THIS CAR FOR SILICA SAND WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO WEDRON OR OTTAWA. You might wonder about the stars in front of the CAPY and LD LMT, and a little research provided this explanation from Dennis Storzek: The CAPY stencil was a nominal capacity. The LD.LMT. plus the LT.WT. should the allowable loading for the size and number of axles under the car, unless the LD.LMT number has a star by it, which signified that the owner of the car was imposing a lower limit on its carrying capacity than the axles would allow (TTX flats are often starred, because a concentrated maximum load would exceed the design strength of the center sill). So, the LT.WT. is the weight of an empty, and the LT.WT. + LD.LMT. is the maximum weight of a loaded car, although some cars, like boxcars of merchandise or LCL could be loaded less than maximum capacity.

The Q took 100 of the cars in 1964, numbering them 85700 - 85799, classing them LO-5, and the western subsidiaries acquired 60 virtually identical cars at the same time: C&S 860 - 869 and FW&D 3001 - 3050. Early the next year, the Q was back with a substantial order for 400 more LO-5A's, numbered 85800 - 86199. The CB&Q LO-5 series had three compartments, three Enterprise gravity outlets, and became BN 451100 - 451199, with seven cars from series 85754 - 86169 renumbered into BN series 410315 - 410727.

By 1968, the BN merger was all but assured, and cars repaired after 1968 received the BN Cascade Green pre-merger paint scheme.
