BN Spud Local |
Description: |
Washington's central section is typically dry, as opposed to the part west of the Cascade Mountains. Nonetheless, traffic here is still largely agricultural, which is allowed by massive irrigation. BN runs a weekday local out of Wenatchee to Quincy, called the Spud Local since GN days, to help tap some of the traffic generated by the area's farmers. Here GP9 1702 and GP38-2 2093 sit while their crew is at lunch. The road's former GN depot is off to the right. |

Making the turn |
Description: |
BN train 644 was the daily train between Everett and the Canadian border town of Sumas. It replaced the train that NP/BN ran from Auburn and instead utilized the GN to Burlington, where it took a right 90 degree turn on the Hamilton branch. About five miles later, at Sedro-Woolley, the train made another 90 degree turn back to the north and onto the former NP, which it took the rest of the way to Sumas. On 1 Oct '88 two ex Frisco GP35s were split by a former NP GP9 as they come off the Hamilton line and onto the old NP. |

Description: |
In early 1989 the State of Washington held a celebration and games in Wenatchee WA. BN allowed SP 4-8-4 4449 and Mt Ranier Scenic RR's little logging 2-8-2 no.5 to participate, which required them to traverse the Cascade Mountains. Routine steam had not been seen over Steven's Pass since when the GN put electrics to work through the new tunnel in the 1930s. The weather was dark on both transit days, but that didn't stop a legion of railfans from chasing both trains. While the SP Northern had diesel help to get through the tunnel the small Mike was allowed to go it alone. Here MRSR 5 is at Berne and about to enter the east end of the tunnel. The road put a GN herald on the locomotive's tender for its adventure. |

BN 2081 |
Description: |
During the late 1980s and early 1990s the BN had two GP38-2s based at Everett that were configured with special brake systems for use on the Boeing spur located at Mukilteo. 2080 and 2081 pretty much stayed around Everett during that period, working local freights and switching the yard as well as pulling the Boeing local duties. The latter unit is shown here on an April night in the city's Delta Yard. |
